Solar Panels / Modules & Regulators:
The sun is a great source of energy, especially in Africa. We have the opportunities to convert that energy into electricity. By storing additional energy obtained from the sun during the day in a proper way, by charging batteries for example, we can have electricity 24 hours a day...
To convert the energy from the sun into electrical energy, we use solar panels / modules. The output from the panel / module is a DC open circuit voltage (typically around 21-22 Volt in our applications). When connected to a load, current starts to flow to the load and the voltage drops.
For our applications in changing to solar power, we will have solar panels connected to a solar regulator unit, which will control the charging to a battery to prevent over-charging (as the voltage of most solar modules are around 17 V - 22 V).
SOLAR SYSTEM DESIGNS & INSTALLATION (alternative power solution):
Requirements Before we can start any system design, we first need to look at the requirements. What is the solar system going to be used for?
We need to know what loads will be connected to the system. The most common appliances are personal computers, televisions, microwave ovens, fridges etc. Water heating is definitely a strong consideration, but there are cheaper alternatives to water heating than using solar panels. Solar water heating systems may be considered, as well as gas water heating systems.
Last, but not least, we need to look at the budget. Solar systems are expensive and must be done right the first time to ensure that no money is wasted. Another consideration is to look at the future savings / losses when using a solar power system.
Design: If the total power requirements are known, we can calculate the average power consumption per day, and calculate a solar system that will match that criteria. It is always better to over-compensate a bit than under estimate. DC POWER & SOLAR will design a system according to your needs and available sun hours on average. We also provide a good back-up solution. (Especially since you can not control the weather)
Assembly: Once we are satisfied that the power requirements of the system will be sufficient and satisfactory, the necessary kit of components can be assembled and sent off for delivery and/or installation.
Maintenance: Solar panels itself need to be kept clean and protected.
Most maintenance would be in the case of battery cleaning and replacement. Good quality batteries that is maintained well can easily last around 3 - 5 years depending on the DOD (depth of discharge, and the number of discharge cycles). An example for instance is to clean terminal posts, check wiring and connections every 2 - 4 weeks to ensure that losses over corroded parts are kept at minimum.
